Start with what you have seen
A description such as 'water appears beside the chimney during windy rain' is more useful than stating that the flashing definitely needs replacing.
Mention previous repairs
Tell the contractor if the same area has been patched before. Old sealant and replaced slates can change how the new problem is approached.
Ask what is included
The quote should identify the repair area, materials and access. If scaffold is required, check whether it is part of the price.
Different proposed repairs
If two roofers suggest very different work, ask each what they believe is causing the problem. Their explanation and photographs can be more informative than the price alone.
